Genesis 1:1-5 King James Version (KJV)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day

Let's also read the Amplified version

In the beginning God ([a]Elohim) [b]created [by forming from nothing] the heavens and the earth. The earth was [c]formless and void or a waste and emptiness, and darkness was upon the face of the deep [primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth]. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters. And God said, [d]“Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good (pleasing, useful) and [e]He affirmed and sustained it; and God separated the light [distinguishing it] from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was [f]evening and there was [g]morning, one day

Four words to start your day

"In the beginning God"

genesisinthebeginningFour powerful words of thought "In the beginning, God".  Everything we see, experience and feel had it's start with these four words.

Can you name some things you see?

  • sky
  • birds
  • grass
  • animals
  • people
  • stars

Name some things you experience?

  • family (marriage, children, siblings)
  • work
  • rest
  • love
  • deception

What are some things you feel?

  • heat from the sun
  • wind
  • loved
  • confused
  • excitement

St John 1:3 tells us "all things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made".  Nothing exist with Elohim.  God is the only one who can take nothing and make something.  In the book of Revelation He is called the "Alpha and Omega".  Alpha meaning beginning, Omega meaning end.

We know a thing or two about beginnings ourselves.  We have memories of our firsts: first day of school, first time we understood something, first moment we realize our mother's name was not mom, first love, first disappointment, first car, first job etc.  The list goes on and on and yet we still have some first's to experience.

In the beginning God , wow what a powerful statement.  How powerful and what does it tell us about God?

  • God is self sufficient - Acts 17:24-25 All things are God's to give, and all that is given is given by Him.
  • God is omniscient - Psalm 139 1-6 God is all knowledge.  Nothing surprises Him.  Nothing is a mystery.
  • God is omnipresent - Psalm 139:7-12 God is everywhere.
  • God is El Shaddi - Genesis 49:22-26 God Almighty

Beginning in the Hebrew is re'shiyth meaning

  • first in order, time and rank
  • chief
  • choice part

the same is ro'sh meaning

  • head of
  • top, tip
  • height of (stars)
  • sum

Now let's read with understanding

In the beginning, in the first order in rank and before time, the chief of order, rank and time, the choice part of, the top and tip of, in the height (above all), the sum( the total of the matter of) God, Elohim, Creator, Alpha, being self sufficient (nothing before Him), omniscient (all knowing), omnipresent (everywhere at all time),  Almighty God (El Shaddi) created (made something out of nothing)....oh sorry got carried away. 🙂

Everyday we are blessed to awake to another day, guess what?  It's a first.  Not the first time being awake, not the first Tuesday or whatever day of the week it is, nor is it the first June we've experience or the first 13th or whatever the date might be.....BUT....It is the first Sunday June 13, 2016 ever there is never be another one.  Just like us each day is an original.  We are originals, yes, we made have some similarities with others but there is not another one of us anywhere.  That's just like God, there is no other besides Him and He made us in his image "one of a kind".

How would we carry ourselves if we faced each task, circumstance or situation with the thought "in the beginning God".  Would we be more mindful at the start of our day, if so it certainly would help us carry out and life the scripture Psalm 118:24 "This is the day that which the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it".

My personal application will be for the next 7 days (at which time we will come back and update) "in the beginning God" will be the focus of my meditation, quiet, reflection time.  Looking forward to how the Lord is going to reveal more of Himself.

Now, in 7 days we are going to look at the next 4 verses: from the thought of being void & dark, God said and light
